For this past semester, there was a class lecture on social networking sites. Social networking sites are anywhere from Facebook to Twitter. I’ve begun to discover over the past few years that SNS’s have increased in the way people communicate with each other. I remember when I was in middle school, and the only way to contact a person was through calling them on the telephone. Now it’s not only calling, and texting, but people are now using SNS’s to find out what their friends are doing, and talk about what they are doing. For this blog assignment, I’m discussing about the increase usage of SNS’s, and what the future holds for it. According to class lecture, the definition of SNS is it must allow users to: 1.Construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system. 2. Articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and 3. View and traverse their list of connection and those made by others within a bounded system (Class lecture 10/17/2011) So facebook for example, is a social networking site because it follows the definition, and contains the following; 1 a public profile for the individual user, 2 contains a friends list on each users profile in which they are “friends” with, and can search for their friends or other people they know to be friends with, and 3 facebook has a “newsfeed” section on each user’s profile in which they can view other people, and see what they are doing. The increase of SNS’s has been huge over the past few years. People are not only using Social Networking sites to keep up with their friends and family, but they are also using SNS’s to communicate through one another. Facebook, for example, has a program called “check in,” Which allows the user to let everyone on facebook know where they are. “Status updates” Like twitter, is another program on facebook which allows the user to post about things they are doing at the moment, or what they’re going to do later, or what’s on their mind. It seems that because SNS’s have turned into a communication center, people are spending more time on SNS’s today than they did three years ago. According to an article titled: “Led by Facebook, Twitter, Global Time Spent on Social Media Sites up 82% Year over Year”, It states that “Consumers spent more than five and half hours on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter in December 2009, an 82% increase from the same time last year when users were spending just over three hours on social networking sites”. ( Nielson, Jan 22, 2010) This means that the more time people spend on SNS’s, the more the numbers increase. I am probably one of these people. Now that I have an Iphone, I find myself being on my facebook app more, and more, because the accessibility is easy, however I see the future for usage of SNS’s will be increasing more and more every year.

I agree SNS's are extremely popular and seem to be increasing more and more. These sites such as Facebook and Twitter allow for us to be creative and to put forth our ideas about what we like and dislike. I find it very convenient to keep in touch with family members who live far away and friends whom you haven't seen in years. It's a great source to use when you want to get to know someone a little better. I wouldn't go as far to say that everything someone puts on their profile is true but at least it gives you some insight to their lives. As long as they keep the site simple and to the point I'm all for Social Networking Sites.
